Leave it to an unconventional quarterly like The Thing, which is a periodical in the form of an object, to collaborate on an unconventional art project with Levi’s Made & Crafted. Recently in San Francisco, artworks have been popping up in public places—on billboards, bus shelters, public transportation stations, and such. Called Moment to Moment, the endeavor is based on a project that visual artist Dan Graham did in the 1960s: He purchased ad space in publications like Harper’s Bazaar and Arts Magazine to create art pieces.
Moment to Moment includes commissioned art in the form of online videos, text, paintings, animated gifs, photographs, and essays—all exploring the central theme that “Good Things Take Time.” While these photos show a few of my favorites that have been installed around San Francisco, including Berkeley artist Susan O’Malley’s work (above), they are happening in cities worldwide this summer and fall. Whenever you come across one of these pieces, you can’t help but stop and take notice. They serve as reminders to set aside a moment to slow down and experience the beautiful details that surround us.
