Cut Feather Shadowboxes by Chris Maynard

Can you believe that these pieces are cut from real feathers? Artist Chris Maynard uses feathers that birds have shed from zoos and private aviaries to create these incredible, hand-cut pieces of art. Chris believes that each feather is itself a work of art—a bit of perfection. He’s actually professed himself to be “feather obsessed.”

By using tiny eye surgery scissors, forceps, and magnifying glasses, Chris carefully cuts into the recycled feathers. Each piece is housed in a shadowbox, playing with the positive and negative space as well as aspects of the light. The intricate shapes and careful presentation give each the feeling that they could take flight.
